What is a lossless compression?

Lossless compression doesn't change data, decompressed file is same as the original source. Think ZIP, RAR, ACE. You wouldn't want your document to lose few letters here and there on decompression would you? :)

Major advantages of lossy compression were small file size and widespread usage. While we will try to promote lossless to counter second argument, small file size advantage stays. But for how long? Memory is cheap, storage space grew to incredible sizes and broadband Internet access is standard nowadays. So does space saving give you enough reasons to decrease quality of your music?

If you say no to that question, let us inform you there are many people thinking like you :) And luckily there are lossless formats, some of them are available for years, so today they are matured, tested and reliable. You can choose between many, ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), Dolby TrueHD, FLAC, Monkey's Audio (APE), WavPack, WMA Lossless... Our choice was FLAC and we'll try to share that enthusiasm.
